In considering the above KEY CONCEPTS, it is worth having a thought about the main disciplines behind the SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT and SUSTAINABLE COMMUNITIES movement.
There are already a whole myriad of professions and occupations that are involved with the progressing the SD subject, be we feel that at the root of its intellectual development are the GEOGRAPHY and TOWN PLANNING disciplines
The two subjects - which deal with spatial understanding and analyses, and the functioning of different aspects within the spatial dimension, including distributions, interactions and processes - are ideally placed to further our understanding of CLIMATE CHANGE, GLOBAL PROCESSES and SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT.
TOWN PLANNING used to be focused more on LAND USE ISSUES, and provided a more straightforward regulatory system for development. It is now becoming more intertwined with GEOGRAPHY, with the consideration of a much wider set of factors within the new SPATIAL PLANNING SYSTEM. In that context GEOGRAPHY and TOWN PLANNING are experiencing something of a convergence process.
Traditional GEOGRAPHICAL subjects such as climatology, Earth resource studies, urban studies and social geography are now much closer to the core of TOWN PLANNING, itself concerned with a complex matrix of environmental, social and economic considerations.
In our opinion, the two subjects are vital to the delivery of a successful SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT STRATEGY in the UK, Europe and the World.
We would add as a footnote that PETER KYTE is very proud to be both a Chartered Town Planner and Chartered Geographer!!! If you would like to know more about the two disciplines please do not hesitate to contact us, or see the ROYAL GEOGRAPHICAL SOCIETY and ROYAL TOWN PLANNING INSTITUTE websites.
